I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard the phrase, “common sense, not common practice”. I’m sure, if you’re in the same boat as I am, you know exactly what goes through your mind as soon as someone says that; “some people are idiots, of course I’d do that the right way…it’s common sense for crying out loud!”.
HA! We were fooled!
One of the things I’ve had to learn to do is admit when I am wrong and be proud of it. So I am dedicating this post to my admittance of fault and I am proud to say, I’ve learned my lesson.
My question for you: Have you ever wondered why you don’t have more followers on social media channels or why, if you have hundreds or thousands of followers, they don’t comment or share much of anything you post?
I was in this mindset & it was being reinforced by people telling me I was doing everything right in terms of SEO & social media [hint: they gave me this feedback after looking through all my social media sites]. So I was sitting there, being told by PR and marketing agencies that my posts were awesome & engaging with great content, while wondering why no one was commenting and/or sharing my content more often.
LIGHTBULB! [love these moments!]
While listening to a new startup pitch their idea for training college students to do social media for small businesses they said something that made total sense to me but for some reason I wasn’t doing it:
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you
A.K.A. Treat others the way you want to be treated”
I bet you’re thinking, “DUH”.
But have you actually applied this concept to your own social media, be it personal, professional, or for you business?
I dare you to try it.
If you want to get more “Likes” or “Followers”, go check out some people you “like” or want to “follow” & like/follow them!
If you want more people to comment on your posts, try commenting on the posts that other people put out into the world.
If you want more people to share your content, try sharing the content of others.
Do you see where I’m going with this?
I increased my Twitter following by over 100 followers in less than a week using this ideology….so I’m asking you to give it a shot because after all…
it’s common sense!
#thegoldenrule – tweet others as you would like to be tweeted, like others as you would like to be liked, pin others as you would like to be pinned….eh, you get the point! 😀
